Voila! A list and photographs of our framed original advertising posters for sale.
For the ‘dog days of summer’ all of our framed posters are on sale, discounted by 20 percent. We also have a small collection of framed luggage labels on sale, and these are discounted by 50 percent. Help us clean out the shop and make room for all of the rare new posters we are adding to the collection this month! All frames are sold as is.

Toni-Kola by Robys
This poster is a master work of color and design. Robys, who’s real name was Robert Wolff, designed it in 1935, the height of the Art Deco period. Two rare birds call attention to the brand, and at 78″ x 55″ inches, the viewer on the street would have been stopped in their tracks by this advertisement. RARE! Framed by the Studio Shop in Burlingame.

Nitrolian by Cappiello
Another gem by Italian Art Deco artist Leonetto Cappiello, this image perfectly illustrates the fast drying quality of Nitrolian paint! Said to be self portrait, depicting Leonetto painting the stairs of his atelier as his wife, Alice walks down them. Framed 20 years ago by Galleria Scola, this frame should be replaced. Our framed poster sale amounts to an opportunity to buy this rare and valuable poster at a great price!

Favor Cycles by Jean Pruniere
Every poster collector has seen the small 1935 Favor poster with blue figures in a circle, surrounded by red and white stripes. It’s a classic from 1935. This poster is the source material for that image! It’s a French 1 sheet poster, created in 1927 by Jean Pruniere. It is extremely rare. We find turn of the century bicycle posters with greater frequency than we do Art Deco ones. The piece was framed by The Studio Shop, and the frame was designed by an interior designer and placed it in the Sunset Magazine Idea House in Healdsburg in 2012.

Musique Instruments Rennes by Lotti
This poster advertises the proud brand of Bossard -Bonnel in Rennes, France and was created in the Deco period. Occasionally, you can find this piece with a banner on the bottom announcing that the store was founded in 1820 and that they are celebrating their centennial. Ours does not include the banner. Framed with a cherry wood moulding with a rounded profile which suggests the rounded arc of a grand piano.

Geisweiler by Marton
This stunning Art Deco design is really effective from afar. The bottle and glass appear to be floating in space, while the silvery ink which borders the poster set off the edges and contain the image. The technique of printing the stippled silver grey was tricky and Marton uses this skill in other posters as well. This example is framed with a wide, classic silver frame and was framed by the Studio Shop in 2009.

Lolita by Roger Soubie
We rarely buy or sell movie posters, but this one is too good to pass up. Like the book, this 1962 film was controversial. The cast includes Shelly Winters, Peter Sellers and James Mason. Roger Soubie was an important illustrator of travel posters in the 1920s and 1930s, and created some very famous posters for Chamonix Mt. Blanc. This example is framed with a flat-profile wide silver moulding. The profile of the frame echoes the lettering on the poster, and the mottled silver tone of the frame picks up on the texture of the stone lithography. Bonus! This poster used to hang in the bar of the famous Alcazar Theatre in San Francisco.

Squelette des Oiseaux
This piece is from a series of teaching posters which were created around the turn of the century, and were printed by Champenois, the atelier which printed the fine posters of Alphonse Mucha. Educational charts became common in the 1800’s because the industrial revolution had created a new middle class, more children went to school and classroom size increased. These charts needed to be large in scale and bold in color so they could be seen from any seat in the classroom. Framed by North Berkeley Framing.

Fine Armagnac by Eugene Oge 
Oge was a beloved Belle Epoque posterist who worked for atelier Charles Verneau for many years. Oge’s figures are caricature like- their facial expressions and gestures exaggerated- which means they translate emotion beautifully, an effective method in poster art. In this poster, two safe crackers are surprised when they open a safe and find Armagnac. The translation is “Nuts, there is no dough, but there is Armagnac, a true treasure”. This piece was framed by North Berkeley Framing and displayed in a law firm in San Francisco for many years.

A proud pelican casts a reverse shadow on the bright green wall behind him in this happy Art Deco Poster. The pelican wears a big smile, and eyelashes! The poster is embellished with silver ink in the outlines and was printed in France, circa 1925. La Bouille Soleil
Winemakers, you will hold the trump card when you use our product! This poster advertises a ‘boullie’ or mixture which would fertilize grapes and protect them from mildew and black rot. The French grape crop had been nearly wiped out by phylloxera in the 19th century, and there was subsequently great demand for products like this. Framed with a simple orange moulding.

Carducci and Herman by David Lance Goines
A pleasing and natural design by master printmaker David Lance Goines which was created in 1981. The narrow shape of the poster emphasizes the length of the shovel. Poster is beautifully framed with a small inset of green mat covered with a wide grey mat and a frame which suggests the bark of a tree. Framed by the Studio Shop.

Domaine Chandon by David Lance Goines
A seductive nymph crowned with grape leaves hugs an abundant bunch of grapes to her chest and smiles. The model for this poster is a young Sophie Goines. Framed with a beautiful wooden ‘tinta negra’ frame with decorative pin markings by the Studio Shop.

Tentoostelling by Richard R. Roland Holst
In the style of the Vienna Secession, Holst, who was printmaker and ceramacist advertises an exhibition of prints. The image is of a tree with seeds, and the typestyle is distinctive. This piece is in an exquisite closed-corner frame which has an antiqued gold finish and is ornamented with floral rosettes in the corners. Framed by the Studio Shop.

Credit Nationale by Rene Lelong
After World War I, France set out to rebuild. The country, it’s population and it’s culture, all of which had been dealt a heavy blow as most of the battles were fought on French soil. This poster advertises a Reconstruction Bond, and features Marianne, France’s allegorical symbol in strong swords to ploughshares pose. Framed by Artscapes Framing.

Prestito Nationale by Mario Borgoni
Mario Borgoni was a gifted Italian illustrator and draftsman. He worked in the Italian “Liberty” style, also known as Italian Art Nouveau. Later in career, he became the director of the prestigious print house Richter & Cie in Naples. In this image, the soldier is shown in retreat, brandishing his sword as he holds up the tattered Italian flag. This image was used in the Huntington Museum Show about World War I titled “Your Country Calls.” Framed in a triple frame, antiqued gold on the outside, flat walnut and a beaded fillet. Framed by Artscapes Framing.

Amado Gonzalez studied with Diego Rivera in Mexico and immigrated to San Francisco where he worked as an illustrator and professor of art at San Francisco City College. In the 1960s he was hired by the Wine Advisory Board to illustrate a cookbook “Cooking with California Wine Makers and create a series of posters promoting California as the “Wine Land of America. The map shows which regions of Calfornia were associated with grape growing at the time. What is missing from the map is the interstate or Highway 5, which was started in 1966. Framed by the Studio Shop.

The plane is meant to inspire a note of urgency- telling the worker that they are on the front line of this important war. How Much Cover is Too Much, or Too Little? The French bathing suit controversy as represented in original source material

French beaches, or more accurately, the mayors of some French beach towns, have made headlines in recent weeks for their, so called, “Burkini Ban.” Many, including the New York Times and CNN, have commented on everything from the socio-political nature of the decision to it’s oddly hypocritical tone in the face of our more modern and multicultural western identity.

Posters, primary source documentation that speaks volumes to the ideals and cultural customs of their time, are snapshots into the past. The posters below highlight the fluid nature of French and Italian beach fashion across the decades.

This poster shows women, and men, in an array of beach wear. You can spot everything from bikinis and swim trunks to the couple in a high necked, full length gown and suit.

The swimsuit worn by the sunbather in this poster would seem harmless to many today. However, it was still considered revealing to many during that time.

This swimwear advertisement, from the same time period as the one above, leaves little to the imagination. Showcasing a naked woman in order to sell products was nothing new by this era but using this as an advertisement for beach wear, then policing what women wear at the beach shows the contradictory nature of the time. It also highlights how little has changed since then.

This poster advertises 150 years for the Baths of Rimini. Interestingly, Rimini is the same beach town mentioned in the New York Times article that inspired this piece. It begs the question; how will women’s self expression and personal representation be viewed by the world on the Rimini bath’s 170th anniversary?

I’m back from a month of travel and, once again, I over did it and bought literally dozens of great posters from all over Europe. I guarantee that you will be happy to see what I found.

Air France: French West Africa and Extrême Orient

After World War Two commercial air travel was, for the first time accessible to the public. Wartime technological advancements including radar and improvements in engineering led to faster, safer, and larger planes. An adventurous traveler could now leave their continent and in less than a day find themselves on the other side of the globe. Travel posters, always a tool of mass communication, showed exotic destinations as a means of announcing, “The world is now open to all.” Air France, one of the preeminent airlines both before and after WWII, employed the poster expertly. Their routes traced a history of commerce and many were carved out through colonialism. It is interesting to look at Air France’s choices of which destinations to promote to tourists in their advertising posters and also to examine the images used to evoke adventure, exoticism and ownership.

Although the war afforded advancements in technology and global economics, other institutions, like colonialism, persisted. Many European countries held stake in colonies thousands of miles apart. The British Empire’s holdings in India, the Middle East, and East Africa are often at the forefront of people’s minds, however, France and even smaller nations like Belgium and Portugal were key colonial players. France held power in North and West Africa as well as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and the Caribbean.

Of the Allied powers, the French suffered particular hardship during WWII. As a Nazi occupied nation and one situated on the front lines, France’s infrastructure and economy were decimated by the end of war. Despite this, companies like Air France thrived in the new postwar environment. Flights around France, Europe, and the French colonies in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean became increasingly popular. France’s colonial presences in West Africa and the Far East or L’Extrême Orient, especially Vietnam, made travel to these locations seem exotic yet possible. Posters, like the ones below, were created to market these destinations. The posters themselves, very similar in subject matter, speak to the ethos of the time.

The West Africa poster was created in 1949 by Albert Brenet and shows two young men in a West African pirogue with their prey. This striking image makes references to the exotic bounty of the colony and would have grabbed the attention of any passer by.

Extrême Orient by Vincent Guerra, was printed in in 1950 and features a beautiful bay and mountain scene with fishermen in their woven topped junks. The prominence of the plane shows France’s ownership of this scene as if to say “It’s ours- come explore it.” Both of these images seem to symbolize a rural, bucolic lifestyle that wasn’t quite the reality (pg. 130 Air France, https://www.scribd.com/document/54130846/The-Junk-Blue-Book). The Vietnam of the 1950s was fully embroiled in a war for its independence, first from the Japanese, then the French, culminating in the Vietnam War.

West Africa suffered similar hardships at the hand of its colonial rulers. While embroiled in bureaucratic struggles for recognition by the French Government, the native peoples of these West African nations, (Sénégal, Mali, Côte D’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, French Guinea, Benin, and Niger) were treated as subjects not citizens. Independence came in March of 1962 after the bloody Algerian War.

Today the colonial references on these posters are so obvious as to be almost embarrassing to the Western viewer. But they are an indelible record of the prevailing attitudes of the time period, as are all advertising posters. It’s important that they be preserved so that their messages are not forgotten.

A playful poster featuring a Pierrot popping out from a solid black background. This example was printed on cardboard or ‘carton’ as it is called in France. The piece has a string looped through grommets at the top. These window cards were designed to hang in store windows or directly on cash registers as ‘point of purchase’ advertising.

La Bouillie Soleil

This clever piece was created in the Art Deco period and features the high contrast colors which characterizes art deco graphic style. This poster is aimed at the small vintner and advertises a product “La Bouillie Soleil” which is described as a pulp or mash – and so probably includes both fertilizer and sulfur, and perhaps an insecticide. The tag line ‘the savior of your harvest.’ Is a reference to phylloxera, an aphid borne disease which had wiped out French vineyards in the mid 19th century. These products were essential in the reestablishment of French vineyards. The cards are meant to symbolize luck and therefore suggest that the user is a lucky farmer or wine maker.

Cappiello is one of the most important poster artists of the 20th Century.He studied art in his native Italy, entering art school at the age of 13, and arrived in Paris during the Belle Epoque era, and at the height of poster design. He first worked doing caricatures of famous actresses such as Sarah Bernhardt, but soon turned his attention to the production of commercial posters. Cappiello’s use of bold colors and sharp contrasts was a departure from the early masters of the medium- Jules Cheret Alphonse Mucha and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. And foreshadowed art deco. Cappiello created his first poster in 1899 and very soon, was in constant demand. Over the course of his 40 year career, he created over 1,000 posters and enjoyed life in Paris as a successful working artist.

Nitrolian advertises fast drying paint and the design brilliantly explains the product without words –showing an elegant lady descending a staircase as a well appointed painter paves her way with red paint. Cappiello repeats the design of the poster on the paint can- a clever form of branding. This framed poster is currently on display in Healdsburg’s Barn Diva gallery
